アメリカでは新しい年度が始まっています。長い夏休みが終わって、再び学校生活に戻るときの、興奮と憂鬱の混ざった気分は独特のものがありますが、アメリカの高校生活では学年ごとに経験することがかなり違ったりするので（高校3年生はpromというダンスパーティがあるし）、そうした気分がますます強まるとも言えます。

とかいったメッセージは、恵まれた環境で育った保守派の政治家の口から出れば、歴史や社会構造が生み出した不均衡を無視してすべてを個人の自助努力に委ねる見方になりがちなのが、オバマ氏のような背景をもった人物が言うからこそ、説得力があるものです。そして、教師としては、「ペーパーというものは提出する前に何度か書き直すものだ」という具体的なメッセージがありがたい！
民主党新政権が、子育て支援や高校教育無償化などを通じて教育機会の均等化・拡大を目指しているのは結構なことですが、現代の教育はどういう人間の育成を目指してどういう形であるべきかという、本質的で具体的な議論が、政治家や官僚や教育者だけでなく、社会全体で、これから真剣になされることを強く願っています。
