オバマ大統領の就任演説は、感慨深いものでした。2004年の民主党大会で"there's the United States of America"を繰り返して国民の連帯を鼓舞したときの熱気や、キャンペーン中のフィラデルフィアでの「人種スピーチ」のような淡々としながらも一人一人の心に訴えかける説諭力、国民自身の功績と勇気を讃える当選演説のように、思わず人々が立ち上がって拍手をしながら涙を流すようなタイプの、高揚感のあるスピーチとは違って、現在のアメリカそして世界が直面している大きな問題の数々を直視した、厳粛なスピーチでした。オバマ氏のスピーチはどれも、皆が簡単に覚えて口にするようなキャッチフレーズに満ちたものではなく（オバマ氏の演説で一般の人が口にできるのは、"there's the United States of America"と、唯一のキャッチフレーズ"Yes, We Can"ぐらいではないでしょうか）、彼の言葉のパワーはむしろその内容の深さにあります。ある批評家が、「オバマ氏のスピーチのすごいところは、アメリカ人にきわめてアメリカ人らしからぬことーースピーチをまるごと最後まできちんと聞くということーーをさせることだ。」と言っていましたが、昨日の就任演説も、ほとんど途中で拍手や歓声もなく、ワシントンに集まった人たちも各地でテレビを見ていた人たちも、じっと耳を傾けていました。
"The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents."
"And because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace."
"Our challenges may be new, the instruments with which we meet them may be new, but those values upon which our success depends, honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism -- these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility -- a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character than giving our all to a difficult task. This is the price and the promise of citizenship."
といった文には、アメリカ建国の理念とそれを実現するためのさまざまな戦いを経てきたアメリカ人の精神への、根本的な信頼があり、そうした精神に立ち返ろう、というメッセージがよく表れています。選挙キャンペーン中は変革や未来といったメッセージが前面に出ていたオバマ氏が、就任演説でこのように歴史を振り返っていることに、深い意味があると思います。
ところで、今日のニューヨーク・タイムズに、オバマ氏と夫人の家族のバックグラウンドについての興味深い記事があります。ケニヤやインドネシア、カナダをはじめとして世界中からの人々で構成されたオバマ一家の背景をみると、彼らがある意味で本当に「アメリカならでは」の家族であること、そして歴代の大統領の背景と彼の背景がいかに違うか、ということが実感できます。ここに出てくる、オバマ氏の義弟の中国系カナダ人のKonrad Ngは、ハワイ大学で映画学を教えていて私の知り合い（そんなに親しいわけでもないのに大統領になった人の家族だということで急に「友達」呼ばわりするのもなんなので、「知り合い」にしておきます）なのですが、就任式の途中も彼の姿が何度かテレビにうつりました。「ファースト・ファミリー」の中にアジア人の姿を見るのもとても新鮮です。
それにしても、単純に見かけの点からだけ言っても、なんて素敵なファースト・ファミリーなんでしょう。
